Narrative
The mismatched cousins reunite for a trip to Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the tension between the odd couple resurfaces against the backdrop of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, the location is where Jesse Eisenberg;s real-life ancestors settled in the diaspora. Benji Kaplan: We move, we stay light, we are agile. Benji Kaplan: The conductor comes over to take the tickets, we tell him we are going to the bathroom.
Benji Kaplan: Yeah
David Kaplan: The bathroom. Benji Kaplan: He gets to the back of the train and starts walking towards the front, looking for a stribai. David Kaplan: Excuse me, or we stribai? When he gets to the front, the train will be at the station, and we will be free to go home. David Kaplan: That’s so stupid.
This is our country
Tickets are probably like twelve dollars. Benji Kaplan: That’s the principle of the matter. We should not have to pay for train tickets in Poland. David Kaplan: No, it’s not, it was our country. They kicked us out because they thought we were cheap.
True Pain is a wonderful movie
Featured on CBS News Sunday Morning: Episode #46.44 (2024). Jessie Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin give the best performances of their careers. I have no doubt that Culkin will be a major contender for the Oscars this year. Eisenberg also wrote the screenplay for this movie and directed it. He knocked it out of the park and did both of those things.
The screenplay for this movie is consistently intriguing, emotional, and funny
The movie deals with some tough topics and they’re all handled so tastefully. This is a movie that clearly meant something to everyone who made it, and I believe you can see that in the final product.
