Nonprofit Governance Models

There comes a point in every nonprofit that founders realize they need advice, direction and pairs of hands. Many nonprofits set up the board of directors at this moment. But not all boards function the same. There are many governance models to ensure that your charity is managed correctly and fulfills its mission.

The advisory model is among the most popular models of nonprofit governance. This allows the executive director to meet regularly with an advisory board to get advice on how to run the nonprofit. The governing board can be different or the same than the advisory board, based on the terms agreed upon. Another popular model is the click now cooperative governance model. It is a democratic system that distributes the power equally amongst all board members. It is ideal for organizations that aren’t legally required to have an executive director.

The Policy Board Model has also become very popular. It was created by John Carver, this governance model is a great method for creating guidelines that management and board must adhere to.

All of these models are excellent however they may not be right for your organization. Fortunately, it’s typical for nonprofits to employ one central governance model and develop additional models to meet the unique requirements of their organizations. This makes for a powerful combination of systems that help your organization to grow and reach its goals.
